Connecting Youth to Productive Careers in the Construction Trades

What is YouthBuild?
YouthBuild is a comprehensive job training, education, and leadership development program for young men and women who have no apparent path to a productive future. Unemployed, underemployed and undereducated young people ages 15 to 19 work toward their high school diploma while learning job skills by building affordable housing for homeless and low-income citizens. Strong emphasis is placed on leadership development and community service.  Most importantly, YouthBuild challenges young men and women to achieve their goals by contributing positively to their communities.

Recognized "Best Practice" in the Fields of Youth Work and Violence Prevention.

  • Effective solution to the current juvenile justice crisis in California
  • Effective solution to the lack of trained workers in the building trades
  • Effective solution for youth aging out of the foster care system
  • Effective solution for older youth to complete their high school education

How is YouthBuild Different?

New Haven's YouthBuild Program has involved young people energetically reconstructing and revitalizing low income properties in San Diego County.

The most recent cycle was the conversion of our current Debra Lane property into the Hoffman Transitional Living House.  The project involved a complete makeover of the property including:

  • Exterior – painting, fence building, concrete walks, irrigation and sod installation, landscaping
  • Interior – drywall & texture, painting, laminate floor installation, lighting fixtures, bathroom remodels, carpeting, basic plumbing, electrical and installation of new windows and doors.
